Episode 133: The Undiscovered Country

CONSTANT AS THE NORTHERN STAR

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country debuted in 1991 and it marked the end of the adventures from the cast of the original Star Trek.

A whodunit with political overtones, this movie was a great success, leaving many wondering why it was the last movie with Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest of the Enterprise crew. It was a film that performed well during a disappointing year at the box office and was also the only Trek movie to win a Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film.

This week, we’ll take a look at The Undiscovered Country and talk about one of our favorite Star Trek adventures. Plus, we’ll look at the Klingons and whether Chang may be among the best of them. We’ll also examine the central questions this film brings up for us–like whether it stands the test of time.

Plus news on a Star Trek: Discovery panel at Wondercon, Saturn Award nominations for Discovery, and Star Trek Online players can now “send their ships” to get printed—it’s all in this week’s episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!

Episode 129: The Conscience of the King

THE PLAY’S THE THING

4,000 people.

That’s how many were executed at the directive of Governor Kodos of the failed Tarsus IV after a fungus destroyed most of the colony’s food supply leaving 8,000 colonists to starve to death. Kodos ordered the deaths of the 4,000 so the other 4,000 colonists might live.

Among those survivors was James T. Kirk and, now, he’s left with the task of figuring out if actor Anton Karidian is really Kodos the Executioner.

This week, we’ll discuss this classic TOS episode and why it was one of Bill’s favorites, even as a child. We’ll talk about our favorite moments from this episode and examine the central question, “What, if anything, could Captain Kirk have done differently?

Plus, news on a brand new Star Trek merchandise portal on the world’s biggest retailer, how William Shatner thinks he could be incorporated into Star Trek again, and listener voice mails in this episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!

Harry could be the most abused character in the history of Star Trek and, this week, Dan and Bill will take a look at the oft-tortured and long-suffering ensign. They’ll discuss some of the more creative ways he was tortured and consider why he wasn’t promoted once by Captain Janeway.

Episode 123: All Good Things…

TNG’s SERIES FINALE

This week, we wrap up our year-long retrospective of Star Trek: The Next Generation with a look at the series finale, “All Good Things…”

Airing in 1994, it was the first true finale for a Star Trek series getting a chance to do something that TOS never did. Some have called it the best finale of all the Treks, and others the best finale of all time!

Bill and Dan will look at the episode and what makes it so great and see if it still holds up when compared to the other series finales.
