Episode 133: The Undiscovered Country

CONSTANT AS THE NORTHERN STAR

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country debuted in 1991 and it marked the end of the adventures from the cast of the original Star Trek.

A whodunit with political overtones, this movie was a great success, leaving many wondering why it was the last movie with Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest of the Enterprise crew. It was a film that performed well during a disappointing year at the box office and was also the only Trek movie to win a Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film.

This week, we’ll take a look at The Undiscovered Country and talk about one of our favorite Star Trek adventures. Plus, we’ll look at the Klingons and whether Chang may be among the best of them. We’ll also examine the central questions this film brings up for us–like whether it stands the test of time.

Plus news on a Star Trek: Discovery panel at Wondercon, Saturn Award nominations for Discovery, and Star Trek Online players can now “send their ships” to get printed—it’s all in this week’s episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!

Episode 129: The Conscience of the King

THE PLAY’S THE THING

4,000 people.

That’s how many were executed at the directive of Governor Kodos of the failed Tarsus IV after a fungus destroyed most of the colony’s food supply leaving 8,000 colonists to starve to death. Kodos ordered the deaths of the 4,000 so the other 4,000 colonists might live.

Among those survivors was James T. Kirk and, now, he’s left with the task of figuring out if actor Anton Karidian is really Kodos the Executioner.

This week, we’ll discuss this classic TOS episode and why it was one of Bill’s favorites, even as a child. We’ll talk about our favorite moments from this episode and examine the central question, “What, if anything, could Captain Kirk have done differently?

Plus, news on a brand new Star Trek merchandise portal on the world’s biggest retailer, how William Shatner thinks he could be incorporated into Star Trek again, and listener voice mails in this episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!

Episode 127: Harry Kim Must Suffer

STILL AN ENSIGN

Man, has this guy been through a lot.

Ensign Harry Kim of the Starship Voyager. Operations Officer of the only Starfleet vessel in the Delta Quadrant. In seven years, he has seen a lot of things happen.

The problem is, they’ve happened to him. Harry could be the most abused character in the history of Star Trek and, this week, Dan and Bill will take a look at the oft-tortured and long-suffering ensign. They’ll discuss some of the more creative ways he was tortured and consider why he wasn’t promoted once by Captain Janeway.

Plus, there’s news on a new book on TOS, award nominations for Star Trek: Discovery, a brand-new podcast from Dr. Trek, and we’ll fondly remember DeForest Kelley who would have been 98 years old this week.

Episode 116: Twilight

ONE OF ENTERPRISE’S BEST

This week, Your Independent Star Trek Podcast returns with a look at one of the best “Reset Button” episodes ever.

You know, it’s one of those episodes where things occur and then everything is taken back to an earlier time and none of the characters remembers anything that actually happened in the episode?

It’s been used at various times throughout Trek, and this time, it’s one of the best uses of the style.

We’ll consider the episode “Twilight” from the third season of Star Trek: Enterprise and tell you why we love it. In fact, we’ll just tell you right up front why you need to watch this episode and what makes it so memorable, no pun intended.

Plus, Discovery news, Star Trek Online news, and the 30th Anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation in this week’s episode of Trek Geeks!

Episode 115: Workforce

A DIFFERENT LIFE FOR THE CREW

Bill was watching BBC America recently and came across two Voyager episodes he’d never seen.

It was the season 7 two-parter, “Workforce,” in which the crew finds themselves kidnapped by an alien race and put to work in their industrial plants.  Their memories have been altered and they have no memory of the life they know.

We’ll examine this episode in true Trek Geeks style and tell you the things we liked, as well as some of the things we didn’t. Plus, we’ll take a look at some central questions this episode raises for us.

Believe it or not, there’s one aspect of this story on which Bill and Dan disagree! Find out what it is in this week’s episode.

Plus, there’s lots of news regarding Star Trek: Discovery, brand new pins from our friends at FanSets, and the very first installment of Discovering Trek: A Star Trek Discovery Companion has been released and you can subscribe right now!

Episode 113: See-It or Skip-It: TNG S5

A RETURNING FAVORITE!

Our See-It or Skip-It episodes are always fun, and this one is no exception!

This time, we’ll take a good, long look at the 5th season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. With episodes like “Darmok,” “Unification I & II,” and “The Inner Light,” there is plenty to talk about in TNG’s fifth season!

Joining us for the fun will be “The Godfather of the Trek Geeks Podcast,” Bill’s long time friend, Dan Kregor of the Inside Podcast Network!

(You have Dan to blame for introducing Bill to podcasting in the first place.)

He’ll attempt to referee the chaos that is See-It or Skip-It, but that’s always a monumental task when Bill and Dan are involved.

We’ll have that, plus lots of news in this week’s installment of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!
