[00:00:28] [SPEAKER_02]: I am everybody. Welcome to the SyFy Sistas Podcast where we give you our point of view.

[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm Tamia Harper and I'm joined today by my sisters, if at Blackmonton. Hello. And Sabrina Wood.

[00:00:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Woo, woo, woo. And what's happening in France?

[00:00:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Absence. Hey, friend. We miss you. What's happening in visible

[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_02]: fran is that paramount was really lovely and extended

[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_02]: invitation to us to have an interview with none other than Katherine

[00:01:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew. The legend. Yes. And you know,

[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_02]: like, you know, there's some people where they just have greatness

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_02]: about them, right? You know, and you're like, well, must respect

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_02]: a lot of bow down and for to the respect, you know, she's one of those

[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_02]: people, like she just helps him. The gravitas of this woman, you know, is

[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_02]: just amazing. So even being on a zoom with her is incredibly

[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_02]: impactful. Right. Oh, I was, I mean, extremely

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_01]: intimidated. Always always like, oh, oh, I

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_01]: right. Yeah, but she was great. I mean, she just came in the room,

[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_01]: and she's just like took over and she just, I was, I was good

[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_01]: when she came in, it was like, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,

[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_01]: she just came in telling us all kinds of stuff. So I was like, no, right?

[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm good. She was excited coming off that high of San Diego,

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Comic-Con. Yeah. It was cool. It was really cool. And it was like,

[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_02]: we had all these questions prepared and stuff, but you know, no need.

[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So nice to just have a conversation like that with her. I feel, you know,

[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_03]: she just started, she just started talking about it. And everything

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_03]: she said was so unpointing, we were just sitting in like a little,

[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_03]: little doggy with the heads. No, I don't like the food going. Yeah,

[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_02]: we look like Bobblehead's right to like, like I would take that over

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_02]: little doggy. Yeah, he's probably Bobblehead is a dog.

[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, there you go. Bobbleheads don't, okay, never mind.

[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, Bobbleheads don't like this. Look, all right.

[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Damn, start your game. She's us. You know what I'm talking about? Let it go already.

[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I just want to keep you on point. That's all.

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_02]: So anyway, we have this wonderful interview that we hope that you all will enjoy as well.

[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_02]: So and if you haven't watched Prattagee this season, what are you waiting for?

[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Right. Why do you? What's that? A strategy is to dive the whole season on Netflix.

[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_02]: And you're missing one of the best Star Trek shows ever. Hands down.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Peter, I'm going to read it and read it. Watch it and read it. Watch it and read it.

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_02]: We definitely want to get season three. We need to show Netflix how important this show is to us.

[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_02]: So watch it and read it as they should and read it and listen to this interview right

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_04]: quick. Come on, let's go. What are you? What are you back? You're all up to.

[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I got you. I'm good. I just came from the San Diego final fan yesterday.

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I'm fun. Where prodigy was received with nothing short of you for it.

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And I sat the front row to see the episode mirror universe.

[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_04]: And I was so moved at the end that I was hiding. I mean the production values, the writing,

[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_04]: the suffatists, the new ones, the sense of humor that they slip in even as Janelly is going

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_04]: to jukote's arms. It's all so smart. Yep. It's all so hopeful and gorgeous. And anyway,

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not Kevin and Dad, Hagen. Oh, we do too. We love them. I mean, love them. Yeah. We said it.

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Show. Yeah. We said that we take it some. Probably I would say it's the best season of Star Trek

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: in a long, long time. Absolutely. Oh, yes. Yeah. And then we fell off from the varieties at the same thing.

[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. Wow. And why is that? Do you think, ladies? I think it's I personally think it's because

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_01]: it's just like you said the nuances. I mean, it's teaching new people, new children and people

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_01]: about Star Trek, but it's giving us Star Trek fans just so much richness. You know,

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_04]: it doesn't it make it all the more exciting to know that we're teaching very young children this through

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_04]: these, you know, funny characters. Right. And at the same time, we're revisiting everything that

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_03]: we know and love. And then I saw. Right. So, it's a great way. And you're telling a new terrific story

[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_03]: within all of that as well because the story is just killer. Yeah. It is killer. And it's killer

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_04]: because it doesn't start with the, I mean, the foundation is not Starfleet. Right.

[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Foundation is this crazy planet, right? This prison that dolls on with the photo stars launched in

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_04]: them, you know, sand somewhere, hologram Janeway pops up because somebody hits a thing and then

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_04]: we're off to the races. But it's learning an entirely new way. This character has no idea what it

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_04]: is to become Starfleet. Good at it. And yet soon enough, through our grandjay, they've all

[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_03]: become that. You know, I love it. I love it too. We love it. And I'm looking you loving it.

[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Right. Yeah. You're just a baby. I do. Yeah. And you wanted to go on. I really wanted to go on.

[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, thank you. Thank you too. I want to thank you guys. I think you were part of

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: me and flew it over Netflix. I don't think that was only us. I part of my $2.00. We put out money

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_04]: and everything exactly. But I want it to be valued. It is to be valued. Can you see the many

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_04]: animation on television that surpasses this and excellence? I'm sure. Gorgeous. Yes. Absolutely gorgeous.

[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's amazing. You know, the other thing that we love about it too is

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_02]: the complexity of the characters. And there, you know, it's like nuanced is a really good word for

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_02]: but, you know, it doesn't we told Dan and Kevin this too that it doesn't talk. The show does not

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_02]: talk down to anybody. You know, and it expects it treats kids and all the viewers, you know,

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_02]: with the respect that we will understand and we will go on this journey with them and we will learn

[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and that they understand these complex, you got this show deals with complex issues. You know,

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: there's the loss and there's death and, you know, there's these identity crises happening. You

[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_02]: know, there's so much going on. I think it has to for them. They are not offended. And as

[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_04]: result, this very young audience, you think there's a five year old in the world doesn't know if

[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_04]: they're pulling their leg. There's a smart. They are very, very discerning. Yes. And there's nothing

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_04]: that they can absorb and learn. And they love it when they're talked to frankly. Yes, I agree.

[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_04]: You patronize a five year old and they walk right away from you. Oh boy. But the head

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_04]: even so patronize, the head of the sick come up come with us, take the journey and as a result,

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_04]: that's how it feels. And when they finally do become cadets, oh yeah. Oh please. Oh yeah.

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you're fine. I'm fine. I'm fine.

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_02]: We don't have a long time with you and we don't know that we might not ever get another

[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_02]: time with you. So we wanted to let you know from our perspective, you know, we consist of four

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_02]: black women even though there's only three of us here. You know, but all of us had a similar

[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_02]: experience when we first met you as Katherine Janeway on Voyager. You don't think that at first,

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_02]: you don't think that we didn't think that we were going to have a lot in common, right? You know,

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_02]: with the white woman captain, we were like, oh, it's been crazy. Absolutely. But we learn to

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_02]: respect Janeway and then more importantly, we learn to love and respect you as a human being.

[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, because we really respect how you lead with your heart, how open and honest you are

[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_02]: about the things that you go through in your life and how you are a straight shooter. And you

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_02]: know, you should straight from the hip and you don't prepare a kid. And there's just so much to

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_02]: it. Now you are a force of nature and we so much admire that in you. And we just wanted to let

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_02]: you know, because tomorrow is not promised. And we might not never get a chance to talk to you again.

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_04]: So we wanted to let you know how much you mean us. And I want to say this to you as

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_04]: women of color, how much that we used to be because of course you would look at a white woman

[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_04]: assuming this role and said, yeah, what does she know about doing? What is this? What she's going to

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_04]: do with this. But you understood that my intention is an actress and as a character was to transcend

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_04]: all of that. So that Janeway's empathy, her humanity, I hope, her sense of humor, her capacity for love,

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_04]: and mostly her fierce loyalty, and her longing to see all of space. And her deep love of science

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_04]: is what I really was all about. So those ones are very, very meaningful to me.

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a powerful thing. We got that we got it all. We got that all for me and those performances.

[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_03]: And we were so glad to see you come back, you know, in this as Janeway again in prior,

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_04]: she was just a, I was like, yes. So I wanted to, you know, I wanted to have a vibrant and long

[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_04]: future. I don't see why it shouldn't. We're in a very strange time in television right now,

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_04]: you know? Yes, oh, yes. Oh, yeah. All over the plays, you know, I was going on broadcast

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know. But for my money, regarding animation and the team behind this thing,

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a president and a parallel. Exactly. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly. I love this show.

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_01]: A little bit. Yeah. That's right. That's right. That's right.

[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_02]: That's me. Oh, okay. I was going to say that like, you know, you wanted to see what,

[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, what was coming down. Oh, you want to, oh, I'm sorry. I thought you had something else

[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_01]: you were going to say. No, I, what I really wanted to talk to ask you about it. I hear you come

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_01]: back to Broadway going back to New York, which I'm back. Yeah. And I wanted to know what,

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_01]: what about the beacon made you decide to come back to the stage? I'm going to tell you the truth.

[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_04]: I probably shouldn't. Oh, it will keep me grounded. I like that for about three and a half months.

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I have a son and very close to when I need to be close to him. He's going through a sort of

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_04]: guy's name. I need to fill again that sense of the collective. This is a non-sample piece.

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_04]: She's central, but then and the thing, the idea, um, breaks my heart. She hasn't seen her son

[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_04]: there as great. He hasn't seen her for 10 years. And he comes to our room to see her.

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's very tense. It's filled with a dark tension. And the question at the center of this

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_04]: day is, did I or did I not murder his father? Right. No. Britain by the very talented Nancy Harris

[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_04]: at the Irish Refatory. So it will be, it will be great to get my hands dirty and my teeth into this thing.

[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_04]: See that's how we love you. How are we love you? Yes. What do you live?

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm in New York and I have a question tester. Yes, I'll be out there.

[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_04]: I come back. I'm great. Great. So, Marina, now you're just down the road in DC.

[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_02]: In Ireland. So really, yeah, trying to come and see that play. Oh, I love to see you on the

[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_03]: boards again because I did see you in the the Catholic heaven. One woman shows.

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I do that. So I saw this. That's where I fell in love with you.

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was I love her so well. Wow.

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, and you're nailed her. Yeah, thank you. But it'll be great. Come to this year.

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Definitely will. Yeah. Definitely will. All right. Let's get on the find out if you did it or not. Yeah.

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Exactly. But let's try to get prodded you back. I mean, let's get the fans.

[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely. You know, stirred up about this. Oh, that's always after the fans. This

[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_04]: fan base is extraordinary. It's the largest and the most intelligent fan base in the world and the

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_04]: most loyal. So I think if the human cries loud enough, how can it be? Right? Oh, yeah. That's

[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_01]: what we're always seeing prodigies praises. I think because I always tell people when someone says,

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_01]: where do I start? And I always say you should start with prodigy. You really should, you know,

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't care how old you are. You should really start with a party because not only do they not

[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_01]: stand down to people. They actually explaining all the stuff we take for granted. Right. Watch track.

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Because we've been watching track. I mean, all our lives Sabrina was watching the OS like to

[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_01]: go to the OS like first came on. So I mean, you know, we take a lot of that stuff for granted,

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_01]: but I watch prodigy and they're explaining something like, oh, that's what that means.

[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_04]: That's what I believe you're seeing it for the first time through their eyes. Right. Yeah.

[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_04]: And the whole thing is reinvigorated and vaccinated and intriguing and dangerous and scary.

[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Wonderful. And that's what we love and that's what it is. Yeah. And it helps

[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_01]: that people who are writing at our start track fans. That helps a lot. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Or get it because they're really, yeah. Not to mention just superb writers with a great understanding

[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_04]: of what it is to build this camaraderie among this group and to see people fall in love,

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_04]: to see people build relationships that they otherwise not in the New Year's with the

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_04]: year or ring that. We're going to go there and they're going to use it because kids are smart.

[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep, they sure are. Yep. Well, I've got one, I've got a prodigy question since we're staying with

[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_03]: prodigy here. Yeah. Which we showed. In this season, you play hall, hall,

[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_03]: chip. So do you approach them as two separate characters when you're getting ready to do your lines?

[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, absolutely. Of course. There's no other way. There's no other way. A hall of ground. There's

[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_04]: a hall of ground. Not real. Not sentient. The effort will always quite real. Hmm. So I take it down

[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_04]: as the app where I am viewer with that every human qualities I think are appropriate. Let's say

[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_04]: almost more of a sense of humor. I sense of likeness. Yeah. She's a teacher, but she's a tool.

[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_04]: She's an exciting and wonderful, near-sensual tool by her voice is higher. It's one of the

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't give it the gravitas that I give out or gently. That's the fun of it. Do you know that's

[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_04]: fine in different levels and playing with my voice? Yeah. I'm very free. Yeah. It's so it's so cool

[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_02]: because you notice that as you're watching it, it's like immediate when Admiral Janeway is on,

[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_02]: you're like, oh, oh, she's right now. Yeah, that's how tight. No. Exactly. Janeway's got that

[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_02]: tone. Like what your mother says with your mother says you're full name and you're like, oh,

[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_04]: it wasn't me. Of course I'm watching her figure very carefully. Oh my goodness.

[00:17:45] [SPEAKER_02]: One of the things I'm interested to know because you are such a great study of character,

[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_02]: you know, because that's what you do. You know, are you? And I know that you've put

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_02]: pen to paper for two memoirs. Are you interested at all in creative fiction?

[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Are you by the way, Navarra right now? Yes! That's what I'm working on here. Oh my goodness.

[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_04]: It's called the Irish House and then almost finished. Oh, it's a little bit of the thriller,

[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_04]: but again, it's about love. It's about love. The Kennedy. Oh, oh.

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Side five sisters are always cool. You got me. You got me.

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, right. There's a universal theme like we all know it. Exactly. We got you. Yes. And I love that.

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_04]: And I think that any actor worth his or her salt has another dimension,

[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_04]: has an equally sort of vibrant capacity to do something. Mine is how I love writing.

[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_04]: I came to this late because I felt that acting would be all consuming in for many years. It was.

[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_04]: And then I just said to myself, why don't you do it? You can do it all. No. So,

[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_04]: I just do it. And there is time. I mean, there is room, especially if you understand time travel.

[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Right. I'm glad you do it. Right for me. It gives me a headache. I don't know whether or

[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_01]: for you. But I'm not. Oh, my goodness. Thank you. Thank you.

[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you. We definitely will. To the theater. Yeah. Love that. Bye bye. Bye bye.

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. What you all think? We enjoy ourselves.

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh my God. I could stay there for a little longer. Oh, for sure. But they're a little longer.

[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_02]: For sure. We did have questions. We did have questions. And you know, they gave us 20 minutes.

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And that was the fastest time. I mean, we have interviewed people for 20 minutes and it did not go that fast.

[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_02]: No. And it felt like 20 minutes. You know? And it felt like whatever time we had with them.

[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_02]: This felt like I was like, wait. Did we just start like five minutes ago?

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what I think we went over. We did. It's what over.

[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_01]: As usual. Nobody stopped us. No. Nobody stopped us.

[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_01]: No. But it was great. I love the fact that we get to talk to her.

[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. Every time we get the opportunity to talk to her,

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I just think that, um, I think we said it in the interview that as black women, you know,

[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_01]: you would not think that this is somebody that we look up to. But I think we were saying that it's not

[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_01]: just her. It's it's it's Kate. You know, Kate is the one that I think is the one that we

[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_01]: like hold on to. From that interview alone, I just loved her if you want. Yeah.
