Episode 140: Star Trek (2009)

REBOOTING THE ORIGINAL SERIES

Few decisions in the Star Trek universe were more controversial than the announcement that there would be a new cast for movies featuring Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the cast of Star Trek. This week, we’ll look at that first film in what has become known as The Kelvin Timeline!

Directed by JJ Abrams, this movie went on to become a global success, bringing a new generation of fans into the Star Trek universe.

We’ll discuss our reactions to the various announcements for this film–including the casting of the legendary Leonard Nimoy himself. We’ll also look at the story and which elements we liked, as well as what things we might have liked to have seen changed.

Episode 133: The Undiscovered Country

CONSTANT AS THE NORTHERN STAR

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country debuted in 1991 and it marked the end of the adventures from the cast of the original Star Trek.

A whodunit with political overtones, this movie was a great success, leaving many wondering why it was the last movie with Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest of the Enterprise crew. It was a film that performed well during a disappointing year at the box office and was also the only Trek movie to win a Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film.

This week, we’ll take a look at The Undiscovered Country and talk about one of our favorite Star Trek adventures. Plus, we’ll look at the Klingons and whether Chang may be among the best of them. We’ll also examine the central questions this film brings up for us–like whether it stands the test of time.

Plus news on a Star Trek: Discovery panel at Wondercon, Saturn Award nominations for Discovery, and Star Trek Online players can now “send their ships” to get printed—it’s all in this week’s episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!

Episode 106: Star Trek Nemesis

WAS IT THE PROPER SEND-OFF?

Can you learn to see in the dark, Captain?” – Shinzon

It was a dark movie. Literally and figuratively.  It ended up being the last of the Star Trek movies with the TNG cast.  But was it a worthy finale??

This week, the Trek Geeks will give their take on Star Trek: Nemesis.  Their memories of the 2002 film are not as positive as other feature films, and they will jump right into the reasons why this was a less than stellar big screen exit for Picard and his crew.

Prime Directive violations, dark sets, “tired” acting.  This list goes on and on.  But fear not, there are plenty of things that the Geeks liked, and they will get into those too!

Plus, perhaps the biggest announcement ever from our good friends at Star Trek Continues dropped this week!  Also, a familiar face recently got to test out the new Star Trek Bridge Crew virtual reality game.  What did she have to say?

In addition, if you are attending San Diego ComicCon or STLV, you may want to make some room for a new con exclusive Holiday Keepsake ornament!  Finally, QMx is releasing a replica of a classic TOS piece of furniture and we have all the details for you!

It’s all in Episode 106 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast! We hope you’ll join us as we raise a glass of Chateau Picard!

Episode 101: William T. Riker

OUR #1 NUMBER ONE!

This week, we kick off our post Episode 100 journey with a fun discussion about the one and only William T. Riker, first officer of the Enterprise D and E.  As the reigning champion of our First Officer Thunderdome Episode last year, we felt it was time to give the Commander the attention he deserves!

Not only will we dive into his past, his present and his future, we will do so with a very special guest! This week, Terilynn Shull from The G & T Show is with us to talk about her favorite First Officer.  We are thrilled to welcome her to the show and we think you will agree – she has some very special love for ‘ole Will Riker!

Additionally, we will give our thoughts to the response we have been getting from Episode 100 “A Journey to Future’s Past, Part I” and maybe even give a little sneak peek into what Part II will bring later this year.  Also, we discuss some great new details about casting for Star Trek: Discovery, will there be a Star Trek 4 in the Kelvin Timeline and William Shatner is ready to play Captain Kirk again at the ripe young age of 86!

Episode 96: Star Trek Generations

TWO CAPTAINS. ONE DESTINY.

The passing of the baton.

In 1994, Paramount debuted the first of the movies to feature the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It would serve as a bridge for the two generations of the franchise and do so in epic fashion!

…but did it?

Joining us to talk about this seventh Star Trek film is our friend Brandon-Shea Mutala from Trek.FM! He’s the host of Melodic Treks and the co-host of Warp 5–and Generations is his favorite TNG movie!

Sadly, Brandon is outnumbered: Bill and Dan don’t count this film among their favorites. We’ll discuss the plot elements and the areas that we thought the film could have improved on, and we’ll debate the personal Nexuses (Nexii??) for Kirk and Picard and whether they fit the characters.

Plus, lots of Star Trek news on the DS9 Documentary and a new release of the ST:TMP soundtrack on vinyl! Enter the Nexus with us and Episode 96 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!  MAKE IT SO!

Episode 79: Insurrection

THE BATTLE FOR PARADISE HAS BEGUN?

Star Trek: InsurrectionThe year was 1998. Dan and Bill were working in telephone support jobs supporting stock trading software and 56k dial-up modems ruled the day.

One day at work, they got the bright idea to download the brand-new trailer for the third movie featuring the cast of The Next Generation–Star Trek: Insurrection!  It took hours for the trailer to download and these two future Geeks looked forward to December.

Then they saw the movie.

The follow-up to First Contact didn’t exactly overwhelm. It’s been a long time since they’ve watched Insurrection, but the Trek Geeks will take a long look at this often maligned movie–and maybe even explain why it’s really not as bad as people make it out to be.

In addition to elements of the movie that they liked (and didn’t), they’ll answer the central question that this movie raises: would it have been better served as an episode of NextGen?

It’s a skin-stretchingly good time in Episode 79 of Trek Geeks–beam aboard, won’t you?
