Episode 146: A Piece of the Action

A ROYAL FIZZBIN

It’s one of the all-time great comedic episodes of Star Trek and the perfect send off in to Convention Week!

Tomorrow, we’re on our way to Star Trek Las Vegas but today we’re detouring at Sigma Iotia II to collect “A Piece of the Action.”

One of the things that Star Trek has always done well is injecting levity after a few serious episodes and this is perhaps the best of them. We’ll look at what makes this episode so much fun, as well as some of our favorite moments.

Plus, we’ll give you all the latest breaking news on STLV. There’s ONE DAY left before the convention kicks off, and new guests are still being added!

And don’t forget about the amazing FanGeeks Party 2018 hosted by us on the one and only Las Vegas Strip! Our good friend, Lew Halboth from FanSets is going to stop by to tell you about all of the amazing pins that people will win at this year’s party!

It’s Episode 146 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast, and it’s a kick in the head, pally.

Episode 129: The Conscience of the King

THE PLAY’S THE THING

4,000 people.

That’s how many were executed at the directive of Governor Kodos of the failed Tarsus IV after a fungus destroyed most of the colony’s food supply leaving 8,000 colonists to starve to death. Kodos ordered the deaths of the 4,000 so the other 4,000 colonists might live.

Among those survivors was James T. Kirk and, now, he’s left with the task of figuring out if actor Anton Karidian is really Kodos the Executioner.

This week, we’ll discuss this classic TOS episode and why it was one of Bill’s favorites, even as a child. We’ll talk about our favorite moments from this episode and examine the central question, “What, if anything, could Captain Kirk have done differently?

Plus, news on a brand new Star Trek merchandise portal on the world’s biggest retailer, how William Shatner thinks he could be incorporated into Star Trek again, and listener voice mails in this episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast!

Episode 105: Two Guys One Trek

A HILARIOUS CROSSOVER!

We listen to a lot of podcasts.

One of the ones we found last year was a fast-paced and energetic show called, “Two Guys One Trek.” It’s the journey of two friends through TOS: one who has seen it before, and the other who had seen every Trek series BUT the original. They think that Trek is best watched with a friend and we love going on this journey with them.

It’s a fresh and unique perspective on the series that started it all–and it’s so much fun! They’ve just released their entire second season where ever you download podcasts, but this week they’re making a special appearance on Trek Geeks.

Join us as Ira Heinichen and Josh McClenney talk about why they started this podcast and we’ll find out what episodes of The Original Series surprised them. Plus, we may iron out whether Josh was trapped in a cave throughout his childhood–the only possible reason he could have gone through all his time on this planet without seeing Kirk, Spock, and company. Good times.

Plus, there’s some news on the Rio All-Suites Hotel for all you STLV attendees and there’s finally a nationwide premiere date for the “Remembering Leonard Nimoy” documentary!

It’s all in Episode 105 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast! We hope you’ll join us for some laughs!

TWO GUYS ONE TREK!

Keep up with Ira and Josh on Facebook and Twitter–and check out their show!

Episode 104: My Directive Is Prime

GENERAL ORDER #1

It’s the most far-reaching concept in all of Star Trek–Starfleet’s Prime Directive of non-interference in other cultures!

Every crew has had to contend with it in some form and, at times, even defy this guiding principle. In this week’s episode, Dan and Bill will discuss some of the finer points of the Prime Directive and how it has impacted the Star Trek Universe!

Plus, they’ll discuss some of their favorite Prime Directive episodes–and some of their answers may surprise you!

But wait–there’s more!  There’s an update on the Cosplay for Good campaign to raise money for the Nevada SPCA–and find out how YOU can help the adoptable dogs, cats, and other animals at Las Vegas’ largest no-kill animal shelter.

Then, there’s news about Discovery toys and we’ll observe the 35th Anniversary of the best Star Trek movie ever!

Episode 95: See-It or Skip-It: TOS S1

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN!

Many of our listeners have made it clear that they LOVE our See-It or Skip-It episodes. We love doing them, so this week we decided to do something that may ruffle a few Tarkelian Bat feathers! We are going to give our take on Season 1 of the show that started it all: The Original Series!

How could ANYONE say that an episode of TOS is a Skip-It? Well you may be surprised to see what we think. Season 1 has a huge amount of episodes, 29 in all, and we will get the breakdown of each story-line, and give you our thoughts on why it is worth watching, or one that you can vaporize with your hand phaser!

To make things even more interesting, we are welcoming our good friend and Star Trek Continues Co-Producer, Kasey Shafsky to moderate the discussion! With three crazy TOS die hard fans involved in the discussion, things might get even more crazy than the Beta III Red Hour!

Plus, we have some amazing updates on the Deep Space 9 documentary “What We Left Behind,” a new Klingon beverage may soon be joining us on the podcast when we record, and a touching tribute to our beloved Scotty, Jimmy Doohan, who would have turned 97 this past week.

So, sit back, grab your glass of Tranya and enjoy Episode 95 of Trek Geeks–Your Independent Star Trek Podcast.

VULCANS NEVER BLUFF!

ep-86-doomsday-machineThis week, we continue with our wind down of the celebration Star Treks 50th anniversary with one of the very best episodes of them all – “The Doomsday Machine!”  As you may recall from our last episode, this one ranks #4 in Bill’s all time favorite TOS episodes, while Dan had it ranked as his 3rd favorite.  Any way you slice it, it is a PHENOMENAL episode and we will discuss all aspects of this classic as well as discuss the amazing remastering of the episode by Mike and Denise Okuda.  We will also talk about the incredible performance by William Windom as Commodore Matt Decker, and what makes this episode so special for both of us.

But that’s not all!  In addition to the discussion about the giant, planet killing cornucopia, we have a lot of news to cover, including some awesome casting announcements for Star Trek Discovery!  Three incredible actors have been announced as we are so excited with who they are!  Plus, we are feeling pretty old with the two Star Trek Anniversaries that occurred recently, and did you know that Star Trek Timelines is making it even harder for Dan to be productive at work?  How, you ask?  Well you will just have to tune in to find out!

Episode 80: The Ultimate Crew

WHOM WOULD YOU PICK?

The Ultimate CrewOne of the coolest ideas in Star Trek Timelines is the ability to have any single member of the Star Trek Universe as part of your crew.  We are talking ANY character from any series, ship, timeline, universe, etc.  That got us thinking.  Who would WE pick for our ULTIMATE Crew?  We break down all the main crew assignments in this “infinite possibilities episode”.  Heck, even waste extraction is discussed because Bill thinks that would be perfect for Dan!

In Star Trek news, perhaps one of the most EPIC and awkward pics in history was taken recently at Star Trek Destination Europe as almost two dozen Star Trek alums got together on the bridge of the Enterprise!

Also, time to fork over some quatloos or gold pressed latinum because the revised and expanded Star Trek Encyclopedia is now available and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive!

Finally, both Bill and Dan received some swag in the mail over the weekend.  What did they get and who is more excited?

It’s Episode 80 of Trek Geeks–beam aboard, won’t you?

Episode 77: The Man Trap

This Episode of Trek Geeks is Dedicated to the Memory of Eric Cone

THE EPISODE THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

The Man TrapIt quite possibly was the television event that forever changed history!  On September 8, 1966 the very first episode of Star Trek was shown on NBC.  It was “The Man Trap” and this week the Trek Geeks are ready to discuss the great Salt Vampire of M-113!

Bill and Dan will discuss all the interesting and quirky things about this episode.  After watching it countless times over the last 40+ years, they certainly have a lot to say about this unique premier episode!  Was that REALLY red blood on Spock’s forehead?  Why does McCoy have a virtual pharmacy in his bedroom?  And how does Ole Salty know to speak Swahili to Uhura? And what’s with that hand-plant in the Botany Lab?

In addition, they ask and discuss if hunting down the creature made this debut episode of Star Trek seem like every other space-themed tv show in the 1960’s where we kill what we don’t understand?

Also, in the news, get your microwave popcorn ready because Star Trek Beyond is coming to digital download and DVD soon, past guest Manu Intiraymi’s project “The Circuit” has started their Kickstarter fund raising, and Adam Nimoy’s “For The Love of Spock” is now available!

All this and more on what certainly is NOT the last of it’s kind – it’s Episode 77 of the Trek Geeks Podcast!

Episode 66: The Omega Glory

Ep 66 - The Omega Glory

AY PLEGI IANECTU FLAGGEN

As we in the United States celebrate Independence Day on July 4th, we thought this would be PERFECT time to discuss The Original Series episode “The Omega Glory.”

Bill and Dan will give a run down of the episode, discuss what works and what doesn’t work, as well as what they like and don’t like.

Also, no discussion about TOS can go without Dan attempting to portray Captain Kirk, and this episode may have the most “Shatneriffic” speech in Trek history!  Will Dan be up for the challenge?

Plus, in Star Trek news, an old friend returns to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C for permanent display – and she looks BEAUTIFUL, Bryan Fuller has some interesting tidbits on the new Star Trek series, the Bluetooth device of the ages is now available, Mega Bloks releases the HUGE Starship Enterprise model on July 22nd, and Van Citters speaks (and we love what he says)!

We may even sneak in a couple of surprises!  It is all here in Episode 66: The Omega Glory!
