Episode 114: Captive Pursuit

PARENTAL ADVISORY

The following episode of the podcast contains mature content and themes including an open and frank discussion on the topics of suicide and self-harm which may be unsuitable for younger listeners.

Parental discretion is strongly advised.

This week, we look at the sixth episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Captive Pursuit introduces us to the first visitor to the station from the Gamma Quadrant. He is Tosk and there’s a lot he’s not telling our crew.

This was an episode that demonstrated that DS9 could be every bit as much Trek as TOS and TNG before it, and there’s a lot to discover in this story.

Additionally, this was the episode that literally saved Dan’s life and we’ll talk about the episode in that context as well.

We hope you will join us for this very special episode of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast.

DISCOVERING TREK

This episode also features a preview of the full-length Episode 0 of our brand new podcast, “Discovering Trek: A Star Trek Discovery Companion!”

Stay tuned after the end theme for our introduction to the new show and when you’re done, head on over to DiscoveringTrek.com to find out more!

Episode 103: J.G. Hertzler

CHANCELLOR OF THE HIGH COUNCIL

When we started the Trek Geeks Podcast two years ago, we compiled a list of names–those people we’d love to talk to on the show someday.

At the top of Dan’s list was J.G. Hertzler–the actor who played General/Chancellor Martok in 25 episodes Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and appeared as two other characters on that series.

We are honored and humbled to welcome J.G. to the podcast this week!

We’ll talk to J.G. about his time on the show and ask why he thinks that DS9 is enjoying such a resurgence now. We’ll also talk about what it’s like to work with Avery Brooks and also about his “The Left Hand of Destiny” series of novels featuring Martok!

We’ll also find out who the better rapper is: J.G. or actor Robert O’Reilly who played Gowron!

Plus–we’ll have an update on our Cosplay for Good campaign to raise money for the Nevada SPCA and we’ll announce the winners of our Star Trek Cats giveaway!

It’s all in Episode 103 of Your Independent Star Trek Podcast—Q’APLA!!

Supplemental #10: Geek The Stump – Again!

PAYBACK!

A message from Dan Davidson, co-host of Trek Geeks: YOUR Independent Star Trek Podcast

“Not too long ago, oh about the time the Patriots were hoisting their 5th Lombardi Trophy, my illustrious Executive Producer decided to subject me to a “Superbowl Sized” Stump the Geek episode.  I wasn’t at the top of my game, however I fared OK.  I told him that he would pay…and well, the time has come.

Ahhh Bill, my old friend.  Do you know the Klingon proverb that tells us revenge is trivia that is best served cold? It is very cold….is spaaaaaacccccceeee.”

On this Supplemental Episode, Dan rolls out another special edition of “Geek the Stump,” where the tables are turned and Bill has to answer Trek related questions with a completely made up point system!  Can Bill hold his own?  Will Dan throw in a couple softball questions to make things easier on his best friend, or will he show no mercy to retain his title as ultimate Trek Geek Trivia Champion?

Find out in this special Supplemental Episode of Trek Geeks!

Episode 80: The Ultimate Crew

WHOM WOULD YOU PICK?

The Ultimate CrewOne of the coolest ideas in Star Trek Timelines is the ability to have any single member of the Star Trek Universe as part of your crew.  We are talking ANY character from any series, ship, timeline, universe, etc.  That got us thinking.  Who would WE pick for our ULTIMATE Crew?  We break down all the main crew assignments in this “infinite possibilities episode”.  Heck, even waste extraction is discussed because Bill thinks that would be perfect for Dan!

In Star Trek news, perhaps one of the most EPIC and awkward pics in history was taken recently at Star Trek Destination Europe as almost two dozen Star Trek alums got together on the bridge of the Enterprise!

Also, time to fork over some quatloos or gold pressed latinum because the revised and expanded Star Trek Encyclopedia is now available and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive!

Finally, both Bill and Dan received some swag in the mail over the weekend.  What did they get and who is more excited?

It’s Episode 80 of Trek Geeks–beam aboard, won’t you?

Episode 78: Recasting DS9

NEW FACES FOR BELOVED CHARACTERS

Recasting DS9This past Spring, we asked the members of our Camp Khitomer group on Facebook to send us their questions for an “Ask Us Anything” episode!

Their questions were fantastic, but there was one we thought could truly be its own episode–we were asked to pick a series and recast the characters with different actors.

Challenge accepted!

This week we’ll recast our favorite series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, with an all new set of actors–and some of the selections may just surprise you!

Plus, we’ll update you on the latest Blu-Ray release in the Star Trek universe and discuss a wonderful essay that highlighted our Trek50 episode!

We hope you’ll join us for an entertaining discussion this week on the Trek Geeks Podcast!

Episode 57: The Dominion

The DominionVICTORY IS LIFE!

This week on Trek Geeks, we take a look at what could possibly be the greatest adversary the Federation has ever faced–The Dominion!

More menacing than the Borg.
More dangerous than the Klingon or Romulan Empires.
More evil than the dreaded Aquatic or Arboreal Xindi.

From the introduction of the Jem’Hadar in Season 2 of Deep Space Nine, they would play a major role in the series through the finale, we’ll discuss the far-reaching hand of the Founders and the Dominion!

We’ll talk about the aspects of the Founders, the Vorta, and the Jem’Hadar we appreciated the most–as well as some pretty big inconsistencies that we’ve always wondered about.

In addition, we’ll take a look at some of our favorite moments through out the Dominion story arc–plus, you’ll learn what Dan thought the name of “The Great Link” was when he first heard it!

Plus, we’ll discuss The News from TrekNews.net, and we’ll announce some great news for Android phone users regarding Google Play!

We can vouch for the loyalty of these Geeks–receive this reward from them, may it keep you entertained!

Episode 53: The Dreamer & The Dream

ONE OF TREK’S FINEST HOURS

Ep 53 - The Dreamer and The DreamAs Bill was gallivanting on an awe inspiring Tattoo Trek to Las Vegas, Dan decided that this week would be a great time to discuss one of  the best episodes in Star Trek History: Deep Space Nine’s “Far Beyond the Stars”, and when Bill returned, he wholeheartedly agreed!

Star Trek has always been about facing ‘issues of the day’ head on, and this episode is the PERFECT example of just that.  From the incredible acting, to Avery Brooks’ amazing directing, to the ugly truth about racism and bigotry, this episode is considered by fans and cast alike as one of the greatest.

We discuss all the things that we loved about the episode as well as a couple of things that we actually didn’t like. This kind of episode can really cause some intense discussion because of the subject matter, and our discussion is no exception!

In addition, we announce the winners of our Star Trek Timelines Poster contest, discuss or trip to Boston to see Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage and what we think of the announcement that Star Trek The Animated Series is coming to Blu-Ray.  Wait…what?

So sit back, relax and enjoy Episode 53 of Trek Geeks – A Star Trek Podcast!  It isn’t a dream!  It is REAAAAAAAAAALLLLLL!  It’s REAAAALLLLLLLLL!  It is REALLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

CHECK OUT BILL’S NEW TATTOO!

Bill was in Las Vegas recently to get a brand new Star Trek tattoo! He had a TOS style pinup tattoo designed and it was tattooed by a true Ink Master–Sausage from Revolt Tattoos!
